Should I Rekey or Replace My Locks After Moving?

When deciding whether to rekey or replace locks after moving, rekey them if they are in good working condition and you mainly need the old keys to stop working; replace them if they are worn, damaged, low quality or you want a smart or high-security upgrade. Rekeying is usually the faster and more affordable choice, and you should do it as soon as you can after getting the keys.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying changes the pins inside the existing lock so a new key works and the old keys do not. The lock hardware stays the same. Replacing removes the lock and installs new hardware, which can also give you a better lock or a different style.

When should I rekey my locks?

  • You just moved into a new home or apartment and do not know who has copies of the keys.
  • You lost your keys, or a key was stolen.
  • A roommate, tenant or former partner moved out.
  • You want every door to work with one key.

When should I replace my locks instead?

  • The locks are old, rusty, sticky or hard to turn.
  • The lock or door was damaged, for example after a break-in attempt.
  • The locks are low-grade builder hardware and you want stronger deadbolts.
  • You want a keypad or smart lock. See our lock installation service.
  • You want hardware with a stronger rating; look for locks graded under the ANSI/BHMA standards.

Which costs less, rekeying or replacing?

Rekeying generally costs less because you are not buying new hardware, and it is usually quicker. Replacing adds the price of the lock itself. For typical Billings prices, see our locksmith cost guide, or look at our residential locksmith services.

How soon after moving should I rekey?

As soon as you can, ideally in the first days, because you cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist. Many people do it before the first night in a new place, or at least before unpacking is finished.

What happens during a rekey?

A locksmith removes the lock cylinder or pins, fits new pins that match a new key, then tests the lock with the new key and confirms the old key no longer works. The work is usually quick, and the lock hardware stays in place, so the door looks the same afterward.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most standard key-operated locks can be rekeyed. Locks that are broken, badly worn or very low quality are usually better replaced, and electronic or smart locks are normally reset with a new code instead. A locksmith can check each door and recommend the right option, and can come to Downtown Billings, the Billings Heights, the South Side and other areas on our service areas page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rekey my locks myself?

DIY rekey kits exist, but they need compatible hardware and careful work, and a mistake can leave a lock that does not work. A locksmith makes sure every lock works smoothly.

Does rekeying change the lock itself?

No. Only the internal pins change, so the lock looks the same. The old keys stop working and the new key works.

Should a landlord rekey locks between tenants?

It is a common practice for property managers because it stops previous tenants’ keys from working. Ask your landlord or property manager about their policy.
